Jan Berlage

Jan Berlage's law career spans two decades and encompasses a wide variety of opportunities and experiences that have enriched his practice of law. His multifaceted career has seen him in court representing plaintiffs in civil rights and wrongful death cases to helping clients resolve real estate and animal law disputes. Jan has substantial experience in trials, arbitrations, mediations, and administrative hearings, including arguments before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He has secured major jury verdicts and large settlements for both businesses and individuals. In October of 2013, he secured a $1.6 million compensatory damages verdict for one of his copyright clients and a nearly $1 million settlement for a surviving heir in a wrongful death lawsuit the previous year. He has successfully represented clients on both sides of the aisle in regard to multimillion dollar claims at the state and federal court level.

Jan's primary area of focus, however, has always been on the practice and application of business law. General business litigation- including commercial disputes, bankruptcy, and intellectual property rights are the practice areas that constitute the majority of his work and extensive career. Jan has guided countless individuals and businesses through the confusing process of bankruptcy and has represented both debtors and creditors with stellar results.

Upon graduation from the University of Virginia Law School in 1995, Jan served as law clerk to the Honorable E. Stephen Derby, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. It was during this clerkship that Jan obtained his first hands on lessons in bankruptcy law as he was given the opportunity to view the process from a different angle. He was exposed to a multitude of cases throughout the year long experience that provided him with a strong foundation as he embarked upon his career and continues to build upon that foundation to this day. He has taught pretrial litigation practice at the University of Maryland School of Law and presents regularly at CLE courses particularly on matters related to bankruptcy. Mr. Berlage has served on committees such as the Board of Governors for the Maryland State Bar Association, the United States Commission on Civil Rights, and the Maryland State Action Committee. He is the co-author of the book, Maryland Equine Law: A Legal Guide to Horse Ownership and Activities (see www.marylandhorselaw.com). He is a fellow of both the American and the Maryland State Bar Foundations and is licensed to practice law in Connecticut, New York, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Jan has achieved the highest rating given by AVVO.com, a well known online legal resource that bases its ratings on client reviews and experience (see www.avvo.com/attorneys/21201-md-jan-berlage-637076.html). Mr. Berlage along with his partners were the 2013 Editor's Choice recipients of Corporate INTL's Commercial Dispute Resolution Law Firm of the Year Award in Maryland.
